Learning Objectives


At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the general principles of aging and the biomedical and psychosocial issues of aging
  • Recognize and apply the various dimensions of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socioeconomic status, as they relate to older adults
  • Discuss legal, ethical, and advance care planning issues related to geriatric medicine
  • Appraise the financing of health care for older adults
  • Identify the basic principles of geriatric medicine, including assessment, prognostication, pharmacotherapy, prevention, exercise, palliative care, rehabilitation, and sensory deficits
  • Use state-of-the-art approaches or models of care for geriatric care while providing care in hospitals, office practices, nursing homes, home-care settings, telehealth platforms, and others
  • Diagnose and manage geriatric syndromes, including dementia, delirium, urinary incontinence, malnutrition, osteoporosis, falls, pressure injuries, sleep disorders, pain, dysphagia, and dizziness
  • Apply relevant information from other fields, such as cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, psychiatry, dermatology, dentistry, and gynecology, to the care of older patients
