This five-day course provides an authoritative update on the specialized clinical management of older adults. The focus is on common clinical problems encountered in primary care practice. The program incorporates the knowledge and skills of many disciplines needed for effective management of medical, neurological and psychiatric illness in the older adult. Lectures are complimented by small group workshop sessions that emphasize practical approached to complex problems of a geriatric population in a variety of settings, including office practices, hospitals and nursing homes. Target audience includes all medical professionals seeking training in the care of an older population.

2024 Course Overview

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate palliative care and its role in caring for older adults at end of life.
- Identify opportunities to engage patients in advanced care planning.
- Determine which patients are eligible for hospice benefits.
- Develop appropriate strategies to manage pain in older adults.
- Recognize the altered presentation of common illnesses in older adults.
- Determine the etiologic factors contributing to the most commonly encountered geriatric syndromes.
- Review the principles of appropriate and effective prescribing in older adults.
- Differentiate between the effects of aging and disease.
- Apply new strategies to manage common medical problems in older adults such as COPD, pain, infection and osteoarthritis.
