The Diabetes Update section on Thursday focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism on Friday and Saturday will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Clinical cases will focus on common endocrine problems encountered in clinical practice. TARGET AUDIENCE: This course is intended for general internists, family physicians, general practitioners, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals. It is expected that the participants will gain new life skills and strategies to manage these disorders.
Objectives: DIABETES UPDATE At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
  • Use newly introduced drugs to control glucose levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes;
  • Be aware of the benefits of new diabetes agents on diabetes outcomes;
  • Appreciate which patients may benefit from beta cell replacement therapy;
  • Appreciate how circadian rhythms impact metabolism;
  • Initiate hybrid closed loop insulin delivery systems in patients with Type 1 Diabetes;
  • Counsel patients on diets and glucose control;
  • Understand autoimmune mechanisms that result in Type 1 Diabetes;
  • Help patients deal with their fears of complications of diabetes, hypoglycemia and injections.
ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY & METABOLISM At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
  • Improve their management of patients with osteoporosis;
  • Counsel patients on the role of nutrition on bone health;
  • Evaluate and treat patients with osteomalacia;
  • Appreciate the availability of different imaging modalities to assess disease of the bone;
  • Assess and treat patients with glucocorticoid deficiency;
  • Evaluating and treating men with acromegaly;
  • Optimally manage patients with pheochromocytoma;
  • Obtain an overview of how to manage hyponatremia;
  • Deliver high quality care for patients with incidental thyroid nodules;
  • Appropriately order and interpret various endocrine tests;
  • Manage commonly encountered thyroid disorders (clinical cases);
  • Identify and treat commonly seen lipid problems.
